The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
